The Post-graduate Department of Punjabi, Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala today organized a thought-provoking lecture dedicated to the International Mother Language Day 2025. The day was observed to celebrate the theme for International Mother Language Day, ‘Language Matter’. The theme of this year emphasizes the importance of preserving and promoting linguistic diversity and multilingual education in fostering international cooperation and understanding.
To mark the day a special lecture was delivered by Dr. Dhanwant Kaur, a distinguished educationist on the ‘Role of Mother Language in Personality development’. Dr. Dhanwant Kaur has a long career in teaching and research in the areas of Punjabi Literature, Literary Criticism, art and folk lore. She also served as Dean Languages, Punjabi University and was Additional Director of Baba Farid Centre for Sufi studies. She was also In-charge of Publication Bureau and Press, Punjabi University, Patiala and Secretary of World Punjabi Centre.
College Principal Dr. Neeraj Goyal welcomed the speaker and said that we celebrate this day in remembrance of the Dhaka incident of 1952 which played a pivotal moment in our history that underscores the importance of linguistic and cultural identity. We must encourage our students to speak, read, and write in their mother tongue, as it helps them develop a strong sense of self and cultural identity.”
The event began with a formal introduction of the theme and speaker by head of Punjabi Department, Dr. Veerpal Kaur, who welcomed the faculty members and introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Dhanwant Kaur.
Dr. Dhanwant Kaur emphasized that mother tongue plays a vital role in shaping the personality of students, as it is the language of emotions, culture, and identity. “Mother tongue is the foundation of a child’s linguistic and cognitive development,” She said. “It helps students connect with their roots, culture, and heritage, which is essential for building a strong sense of self and identity.”
Dr. Kaur also emphasized that the decline of mother tongue usage among students can lead to a disconnection from their cultural heritage and identity. “It is essential for parents, teachers, and educators to promote the use of mother tongue in daily life, as it is a vital tool for building a strong sense of self and cultural identity,” he said.
The lecture was followed by a question-and-answer session, where students and teachers engaged in a lively discussion on the importance of mother tongue in personality development.
A play ‘Sunehri Panna’ penned down by Prof. Gurwinder Singh, Department of Punjabi was also released by the speaker and Principal.
During the event the stage was conducted by Dr. Deepak Kumar, Department of Punjabi.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Davinder Singh, Department of Punjabi.

ਸਥਾਨਕ ਮੁਲਤਾਨੀ ਮੱਲ ਮੋਦੀ ਕਾਲਜ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੇ ਪੋਸਟ-ਗਰੈਜੂਏਟ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਅੱਜ ਅੰਤਰ-ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਮਾਤ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਿਵਸ-2025 ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਇੱਕ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਦਾ ਆਯੋਜਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ। ਇਹ ਦਿਵਸ ਢਾਕਾ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਹੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਵਿੱਚ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦਿਵਸ ਨੂੰ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਅੰਤਰ-ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਮਾਤ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੇ ਸਾਲ 2025 ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਥੀਮ ‘ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਮੈਟਰਜ਼’ ਵੱਲ ਧਿਆਨ ਕੇਂਦਰਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਥੀਮ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਵਿਭਿੰਨਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ-ਤਕਨੀਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅੰਤਰ-ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਝ-ਬੂਝ ਦਾ ਆਧਾਰ ਮੰਨਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਦਿਵਸ ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕਰਵਾਏ ਗਏ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੁੱਖ-ਵਕਤਾ ਵਜੋਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਲੰਬੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੋਂ ਅਧਿਆਪਨ ਅਤੇ ਖੋਜ-ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੇਵਾਵਾਂ ਨਿਭਾ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਡਾ. ਧਨਵੰਤ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਿਰਕਤ ਕੀਤੀ।ਡਾ. ਧਨਵੰਤ ਕੌਰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਡੀਨ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਹੁਦੇ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਬਾਬਾ ਫ਼ਰੀਦ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਫ਼ਾਰ ਸੂਫ਼ੀ ਸਟੱਡੀਜ਼ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਆਲੋਚਨਾ, ਖੋਜ, ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਕਲਾ ਦੇ ਖੇਤਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਡਮੁੱਲਾ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ।ਉਹ ਕਾਫ਼ੀ ਲੰਮੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਲਈ ਪਬਲੀਕੇਸ਼ਨ ਬਿਉਰੋ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ,ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੇ ਇੰਚਾਰਜ ਵੀ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਰਲਡ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਸੈਂਟਰ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਵਜੋਂ ਵੀ ਸ਼ਾਨਦਾਰ ਕਾਰਜ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ।
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ‘ਤੇ ਕਾਲਜ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਡਾ. ਨੀਰਜ ਗੋਇਲ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਬੋਧਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਦਿਵਸ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਢਾਕਾ ਦੇ ਮਾਤ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸ਼ਹੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਦਿਵਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਮਾਤ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਸਾਡੇ ਫ਼ਰਜ਼ਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਗਰੂਕ ਵੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਲ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ ਬਲਕਿ ਸਾਡੀ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਸੰਸਕ੍ਰਿਤੀ, ਕਦਰਾਂ-ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਮੁੱਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਰਾਖੀ ਵੀ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਤ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ।
ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ.ਵੀਰਪਾਲ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਵਕਤਾ ਡਾ.ਧਨਵੰਤ ਕੌਰ ਨਾਲ ਰਸਮੀ ਜਾਣ-ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਵਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕੁਝ ਕੁ ਮੁੱਖ ਆਲੋਚਕਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਇੱਕ ਹਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ ਲਈ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ।
ਆਪਣੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾ.ਧਨਵੰਤ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਭਿਅਤਾ ਦੀ ਚੂਲ ਦੱਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਇੱਕ ਵਗਦੇ ਦਰਿਆ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਡੇ ਜਜ਼ਬਾਤਾਂ, ਸੁਪਨਿਆਂ, ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਰਿਸ਼ਤਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੰਜਦੀ ਹੈ। ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਮਿਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਾਤ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਸਮਰੱਥਾ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਣ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਬਚਪਨ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਮਾਂ ਦੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਡੀ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸੇ ਕਰਕੇ ਯੂਨੈਸਕੋ ਮਾਤ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦਿਵਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਚੇਚੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਮੁਲਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਨਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।ਇਸ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਥੀਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਰਪਿਤ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਾਡੀ ਮੁਢਲੀ ਪਹਿਚਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਆਤਮ-ਸਨਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਰਚੇਤਾ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਮਾਤ-ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਦੀ ਮੌਜੂਦਾ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਚਿੰਤਤ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਡੀਆਂ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਤੇ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਜੜ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਮਜ਼ੋਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਣਗੀਆਂ।
ਇਸ ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਵਕਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਵਾਲ-ਜਵਾਬ ਦਾ ਸੈਸ਼ਨ ਵੀ ਚੱਲਿਆ।
ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਗੁਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਰਚਿਤ ਨਾਟਕ ‘ਸੁਨਹਿਰਾ ਪੰਨਾ’ ਵੀ ਰਿਲੀਜ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਤੇ ਸਟੇਜ-ਸੰਚਾਲਨ ਡਾ.ਦੀਪਕ ਕੁਮਾਰ,ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਦਾ ਮਤਾ ਡਾ.ਦਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ, ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸਮੂਹ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਫੈਕਲਟੀ ਦੇ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਸਨ।
