International Women’s Day Celebrated at M M Modi College
To commemorate International Women’s day, NSS unit and General Studies circle of M. M. Modi College, Patiala in collaboration with the Patiala chapter of the Institute of Company Secretaries of India organised a felicitation ceremony for honouring Principals / Educators / Coordinators of various schools. The theme of this year’s Women Day’s is ‘Gender Equality Today for Sustainable Tomorrow’. Principal Dr. Khushvinder Kumar formally welcomed the dignitaries and wished everyone a Happy Women’s day. With the help of a UNESCO report, he asserted the urgent need of women’s role in the contemporary world. He expressed grave concern at the atrocities being committed on women in spite of the glorious history of freedom fighters, authors, artistes etc. He joyously shared that there are more women teachers and girl students than male teachers and boy students in the college. He mentioned the three challenges that the students are compelled to face today- firstly, lack of practical learning, secondly, need to upskill and reskill themselves, and thirdly, the importance of appropriate social behaviour. He assured that Modi College is planning to address each of the challenges for students. The winners of the recently held essay writing competition were honoured with a memento. The topics were Status of Women Empowerment in the year of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, Balancing of Professional and Social life for Indian Working Women, and Dynamic Role of Women in Economic and Social Structure of India. The students could write in English, Hindi or Punjabi. Out of the 24 participants, the first position was jointly bagged by Ms. Sejal Bansal of BSc (CS) II and Ms. Mehakpreet Kaur of BA III. The Principals/educators/coordinators who were honoured are: Ms. Indu Sharma (Principal, BIPS), Ms. Poonam Sharma (Dept of Commerce, BDPS), Ms. Parneet Kaur (Coordinator, St. Peter’s Academy), Sister Flevy David (Principal, Our Lady of Fatima Convent School), Ms. Manpreet Kaur (Headmistress, GHS, Ranno Kalan), Ms. Neera Khurana (PGT, Dept of Chemistry, DAV Sen. Sec. School), Ms. Savita Bansal (Science Mistress, Shivalik Public School),Dr. Shivani Inder (Associate Professor, Chitkara Business School),Ms. Jaspreet Kaur Dhanjal (Chairperson, Patiala Chapter of ICSI), CA Seema Aggarwal (Chairperson, Patiala chapter of ICAI). Ms. Dilasha Malhi of B.A. I and Ms. Ravnoorpreet Kaur of B.Com. II mesmerized the audience with an eye-opening speech and a melodious song respectively. Dr. Shivani Inder and Ms. Jaspreet Kaur Dhanjal addressed the students regarding gender equality and the essential need to become conscious of our surroundings for a more just society. The Patiala chapter of ICSI honoured Principal Dr. Khushvinder Kumar and Dr. Shivani Inder for their exemplary contribution in today’s event. They also felicitated Ms. Avneet Kaur for securing a merit position in CS Executive exam. A vote of thanks was proposed by Prof. Shailendra Sidhu. The stage was conducted by Dr. Bhanvi Wadhavan. Dr. Rajeev Sharma, Dr. Harmohan Sharma, Dr. Ganesh Sethi, Prof. Jagdeep Kaur and members of non-teaching staff were present on the occasion.
