World Wildlife Day commemorated by Biological Society
The Biological Society of Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala, successfully hosted a one-day event to mark World Wildlife Day 2025 under the theme “Wildlife Conservation Finance – Investing in People and Planet.” The event aimed to raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation and habitat protection, emphasizing youth engagement in environmental preservation.
To align with the theme, two student-centred activities—a Wildlife Photography Exhibition and Competition and Field visit were organized. The event saw enthusiastic participation from students, nature enthusiasts, and faculty members.
In his address, Principal Dr. Neeraj Goyal highlighted that wildlife is fundamental to maintaining ecological balance, biodiversity conservation, and ensuring a sustainable future. He stressed that field visits offer students invaluable real-world learning experiences, nurturing a deeper appreciation for nature and inspiring them to become responsible environmental custodians. Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, Dean of Life Sciences, reinforced the significance of this year’s theme, urging everyone to take meaningful actions to protect and restore nature by promoting conservation efforts and reducing waste.
A major highlight of the event was the Wildlife Photography Exhibition, featuring around 70 stunning photographs of birds, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and wild plants. More than 20 students participated in the Wildlife Photography Competition, displaying their remarkable captures. The winners were:
• First Place: Iqbal Singh (M.Sc. II Food and Nutrition)
• Second Place (Joint): Charu Gupta (B.Sc. I, Medical) & Ojas Gaint (B.A. I)
• Third Place (Joint): Mehakdeep Kaur & Gurpreet Kaur (B.Sc. I, Medical)
In addition, B.Sc. III (Medical) students participated in an educational field visit, exploring local wildlife alongside faculty members. They observed and documented various species of wild plants and insects, gaining insights into their ecological roles in pollination, soil enrichment, and pest control. The field trip also featured interactive discussions on sustainable practices and conservation strategies, making it an enriching experience for all participants.
The event was successfully coordinated by Dr. Santosh Bala (Department of Botany) and Dr. Bhanvi Wadhawan (Department of Zoology), under the guidance of Dr. Kuldeep Kumar, Dean of Life Sciences. Faculty members from the Departments of Zoology, Botany, Biotechnology, and Food Technology were also present, contributing to the success of the celebration.
