An Insightful Discussion with Journalist, Translator, and Writer Nirupama Dutt on ‘Reading Literature in a Digital Landscape’ at Modi College

The Department of English, Multani Mal Modi College today organized an insightful interaction with renowned journalist, translator and writer Nirupuma Dutt. The event was a thought-provoking discussion with students and faculty on the topic of “Reading Literature in the Digital Landscape.” The discussion was focused at understanding the interconnectivity between literature and digital media and to engage students with different perspectives on this issue.
Dr. Neeraj Goyal, Principal of Multani Mal Modi College welcomed the speaker and highlighted the significance of reading literature in the digital era. He stated, “In today’s fast-paced world, the challenge is not just to read but to engage meaningfully with what we read. Literature allows us to explore diverse perspectives, develop critical thinking, and foster empathy’.
Dr. Vaneet Kaur, Head of the English Department, further emphasized the vital role of literature and reading in personal development. She remarked, “Literature serves as a mirror to society and a window to different cultures and thoughts. It fosters creativity and imagination, allowing readers to step into the shoes of others. In an increasingly digital world, instilling a love for books is essential for nurturing critical minds and compassionate individuals.”
The speaker Nirupama Dutt, known for her compelling narratives and insightful perspectives, shared her experiences and interactions with different writers like Amrita Pritam, Shiv Kumar Batalavi, Dr.surjit Pattar and Sh Gurdyal Singh and discussed her opinions on how digital media is transforming the way we relate with literature. In an era marked by rapid technological advancements, Dutt emphasized the importance of adapting to new reading habits while also cherishing traditional literature. She noted, “Digital platforms have made literature accessible to a broader audience, yet there lies a risk of superficial engagement. It’s crucial to cultivate a deeper appreciation for storytelling, regardless of the medium.” She said that embracing both traditional and digital literature can enrich our understanding of the human experience in profound ways.”
The interactive session enabled students to voice their opinions and experiences, bridging the gap between academic study and contemporary literary practices. Dutt encouraged aspiring writers to explore their unique voices and the stories they wish to tell, emphasizing that the essence of literature remains unchanged despite the evolving landscape.
The event received positive feedback from both participants and faculty members. One student Jai Deep Dhillon remarked, “Hearing Nirupama Dutt speak about her journey and the future of literature in the digital age was truly inspiring. It opened my eyes to the possibilities that come with blending traditional literature with modern technology.”
The stage was conducted by Dr. Harleen Kaur, Department of English and the vote of thanks was presented by Prof. Harpreet Singh, Department of English.
In this event all faculty of Department of English and students from all streams were present.

ਮੁਲਤਾਨੀ ਮੱਲ ਮੋਦੀ ਕਾਲਜ ਦੇ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਨੇ ਅੱਜ ਪ੍ਰਸਿੱਧ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰ, ਅਨੁਵਾਦਕ ਅਤੇ ਲੇਖਕ ਨਿਰੂਪੁਮਾ ਦੱਤ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰਤਾਲਾਪ ਦਾ ਆਯੋਜਨ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਹ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਫੈਕਲਟੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਲਈ “ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਲੈਂਡਸਕੇਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ” ਵਿਸ਼ੇ ‘ਤੇ ਆਯੋਜਿਤ ਇੱਕ ਬੌਧਿਕ ਚਰਚਾ ਸੀ। ਇਹ ਚਰਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਅੰਤਰ-ਸੰਬੰਧ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਮੁੱਦੇ ‘ਤੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀਕੋਣਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਗਰੂਕ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਯੋਜਿਤ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਸੀ।
ਮੁਲਤਾਨੀ ਮੱਲ ਮੋਦੀ ਕਾਲਜ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਡਾ. ਨੀਰਜ ਗੋਇਲ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਵਾਨ ਵਕਤਾ ਦਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਯੁੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ‘ਤੇ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਪਾਇਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਤੇਜ਼ ਰਫ਼ਤਾਰ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਵਿੱਚ, ਚੁਣੌਤੀ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਸਗੋਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਜੋ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੇ ਹਾਂ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਅਰਥਪੂਰਨ ਤੌਰ ‘ਤੇ ਜੁੜਨਾ ਵੀ ਹੈ। ਸਾਹਿਤ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਵਿਭਿੰਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀਕੋਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਪੜਚੋਲ ਕਰਨ, ਆਲੋਚਨਾਤਮਕ ਸੋਚ ਵਿਕਸਤ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਹਮਦਰਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।”
ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਵਨੀਤ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਸਖਸ਼ੀਅਤ ਉਸਾਰੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਦੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਸਾਂਝੇ ਕੀਤੇ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਟਿੱਪਣੀ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਸਾਹਿਤ ਸਮਾਜ ਦਾ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਪੁਲ ਦੀ ਤਰਾਂ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਰਚਨਾਤਮਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਲਪਨਿਕ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੀ ਰਚਨਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਕਿ ਪਾਠਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖ ਦਰਦ ਪ੍ਰਤੀ ਸੰਵੇਦਨਸ਼ੀਲ ਬਣਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ। ਅਜੋਕੀ ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਲੋਚਨਾਤਮਿਕ ਸੋਚ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਵੇਦਸ਼ੀਲਤਾ ਰਵਈਆ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੁਹੱਬਤ ਕਰਨੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ।”
ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਬਿਰਤਾਂਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਝਵਾਨ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀਕੋਣਾਂ ਲਈ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਵਕਤਾ ਨਿਰੂਪਮਾ ਦੱਤ ਨੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ, ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਬਟਾਲਵੀ, ਡਾ: ਸੁਰਜੀਤ ਪਾਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਗੁਰਦਿਆਲ ਸਿੰਘ ਵਰਗੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਆਪਣੇ ਨਿੱਜੀ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਹਿਤਿਕ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਮੀਡੀਆ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੇ ਬਦਲਦੇ ਸੰਦਰਭਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਚਰਚਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਤਕਨੀਕੀ ਤਰੱਕੀ ਵਾਲੇ ਯੁੱਗ ਵਿਚ ਨਿਰੂਪਮਾ ਦੱਤ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੰਪਰਾਗਤ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਦਰਾਂ ਕੀਮਤਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜਨ ਦਾ ਸੱਦਾ ਦਿੰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਪਲੇਟਫਾਰਮਾਂ ਨੇ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਦਰਸ਼ਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਰੋਤਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਇਹ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਦਾ ਬਦਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੇ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਆਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਲੇਖਣੀ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਦੋਵਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਕਹਾਣੀ ਬੁਣਨ ਲਈ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦਾ ਡੂੰਘਾ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਸ਼ਰਤ ਹੈ । ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਅਤੇ ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਸਾਹਿਤ, ਦੋਵਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਪਣਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਅਨੁਭਵ ਦੀ ਸਾਡੀ ਸਮਝ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਗਹਿਰਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਭਾਸ਼ਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਉਹ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਵਾਲਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਖ਼ਾਤਿਬ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਾਰਤਾਲਾਪ ਰਚਾਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਅਨੁਭਵਾਂ ਜ਼ਰੀਏ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਅਧਿਆਪਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਅਧਿਐਨ ਨਾਲ ਇੱਕਸੁਰਤਾ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਦੱਤ ਨੇ ਨਵੇਂ ਉਭਰਦੇ ਲੇਖਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਨਿਵੇਕਲੀ ਸੁਰ ਬਰਕਰਾਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਲਈ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਤੇਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਬਦਲਦੇ ਯੁੱਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੀ ਤਾਜ਼ਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਰਵਾਨਗੀ ਬਣੀ ਰਹਿ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ ਬਸ਼ਰਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਜੁੜੇ ਰਹੀਏ।
ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰੋਗਰਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਫੈਕਲਟੀ ਮੈਂਬਰਾਂ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਭਰਵਾਂ ਹੁੰਗਾਰਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ। ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਜੈ ਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਢਿੱਲੋਂ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਚਰਚਾ ਤੇ ਟਿੱਪਣੀ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਕਿਹਾ, ” ਮੈਡਮ ਹੋਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਬੌਧਿਕ ਚਰਚਾ ਨੂੰ ਸੁਣਨਾ ਸੱਚਮੁੱਚ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਨਾਦਾਇਕ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਚਰਚਾ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਰਵਾਇਤੀ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਡਿਜੀਟਲ ਸਾਹਿਤ ਦੇ ਆਪਸੀ ਸਬੰਧਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਵੀ ਸ਼ੰਕੇ ਸਨ, ਉਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋਏ।”
ਇਸ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਸਟੇਜ ਦਾ ਸੰਚਾਲਨ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਡਾ. ਹਰਲੀਨ ਕੌਰ ਨੇ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਦਾ ਮਤਾ ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰੋ. ਹਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ। ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਇਸ ਸਮਾਗਮ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਗਗਨਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਕੌਰ, ਪ੍ਰੋਫ਼ੈਸਰ ਮਨਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ, ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਸੁਖਪਾਲ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ, ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ ਰਵਿੰਦਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਤੇ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰੀ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਤੋਂ ਪ੍ਰੋਫੈਸਰ (ਡਾ:) ਕੁਲਦੀਪ ਕੌਰ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਡੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋਏ।
