Seminar on “Overview of Securities Market, Digital Fraud and Social Media Fraud” Organized at Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala Under the Flag of Empowering Investors through Education

The P.G. Department of Commerce, Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala, organized a Seminar on “Overview of Securities Market, Digital Fraud and Social Media Fraud” on 17 February 2026 under the flag of Empowering Investors through Education in collaboration with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The seminar aimed to enhance students’ awareness regarding investment avenues, modes of trading, IPOs, mutual funds and rising digital financial frauds.
The resource person for the seminar was Mr. Poonam Chand, an expert in securities markets and investor awareness initiatives. He provided valuable insights into the functioning of the securities market and emphasized the importance of informed and disciplined investing.
Dr. Neeraj Goyal, Principal of the college, formally welcomed the expert and emphasized that financial literacy is essential in the modern digital economy. He encouraged students to understand the risks associated with online trading platforms and social media-based financial schemes.
Prof. Parminder, Head and Dean of the Department of Commerce, highlighted that the department is consistently committed to preparing students as competent investment consultants and financial advisors. She stated that such seminars broaden students’ perspectives, enhance their analytical skills related to financial markets, and guide them in planning their professional careers in the field of Financial Management.
Dr. Ajit Kumar, Registrar, also addressed the gathering and raised a few important queries related to investor protection, digital transaction security and regulatory safeguards. The resource person addressed these queries comprehensively, clarifying doubts regarding fraud prevention and safe investment practices.
During his session, Mr. Poonam Chand covered the overview of the securities market, explaining the structure and functioning of capital markets. He elaborated on the concept and process of IPOs (Initial Public Offerings) and guided students on how investors can participate in them. He also discussed various modes of trading, including online trading platforms, demat accounts and the role of brokers. Furthermore, he explained mutual funds in detail, highlighting their types, benefits and working mechanism. He stressed that mutual funds are among the safest investment options for small and retail investors when compared to speculative trading, especially when investments are made through disciplined approaches such as SIPs. He also addressed issues related to digital fraud and social media fraud, explaining how investors can identify fake investment schemes, phishing attacks and fraudulent trading applications and adopt precautionary measures to safeguard their investments.
Dr. Deepika Singla introduced the resource person to the audience. The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Gagandeep Kaur and the stage was coordinated by Dr. Gaurav Gupta. Other faculty members and a large number of students attended the seminar and actively participated in the interactive session.
