Multani Mal Modi College Students Attend Workshop on “Statistics in AI and Data Science” at NIELIT Ropar

A group of 45 students from PG Department of Mathematics, Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala participated in a one-day workshop on “Statistics in AI and Data Science (Data to Decisions)”, organised by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT), Ropar.

Students of BSc Non-Medical, BSc Computer Science, BSc Honours in Mathematics, BSc CSM, and MSc Mathematics programmes, representing second-year and final-year classes participated in the workshop. The workshop aimed to enhance student’s understanding of the role of statistics in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science and data-driven decision-making.

During the workshop, students were introduced to the practical significance of mean, median and mode in summarising datasets, identifying patterns, interpreting information and supporting informed decisions. They learned how these measures of central tendency help make complex data more meaningful and contribute to the development, analysis and evaluation of AI systems. The sessions also highlighted how statistical reasoning enables users to assess data critically and better understand the outcomes generated by AI tools.

An important aspect of the workshop was the effective use of emerging AI platforms, including ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity AI, DeepSeek, Kimi etc. for learning, data interpretation, problem-solving and research-related tasks. Students gained an understanding of how these tools can assist in analysing information, exploring mathematical concepts, generating ideas and improving productivity. The discussion also emphasised the importance of framing clear prompts, verifying AI-generated information and applying independent mathematical reasoning to ensure reliable and meaningful results.

After the workshop, the students also visited Gurudwara Tibbi Sahib and the Ropar Boat Club, making the educational visit a valuable blend of academic learning, cultural exposure and recreation.

The students were accompanied by Head of Department Dr. Varun Jain, Ms. Rajvinder Kaur and Dr. Chetna Sharma who encouraged them to participate in such academic activities to broaden their knowledge and develop an interdisciplinary perspective.

Principal Dr. Neeraj Goyal appreciated the initiative and emphasised that such academic collaborations and educational visits play a significant role in enhancing students’ practical knowledge, analytical thinking and understanding of emerging fields like Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. He also encouraged students to actively participate in such learning opportunities to strengthen their skills, broaden their perspectives and prepare themselves for future academic and professional challenges.

ਮੁਲਤਾਨੀ ਮੱਲ ਮੋਦੀ ਕਾਲਜ, ਪਟਿਆਲਾ ਦੇ ਪੋਸਟ ਗ੍ਰੈਜੂਏਟ ਗਣਿਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ 45 ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਨੈਸ਼ਨਲ ਇੰਸਟੀਚਿਊਟ ਆਫ਼ ਇਲੈਕਟ੍ਰਾਨਿਕਸ ਐਂਡ ਇਨਫਰਮੇਸ਼ਨ ਟੈਕਨਾਲੋਜੀ (NIELIT), ਰੋਪੜ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਆਯੋਜਿਤ ਇੱਕ ਰੋਜ਼ਾ ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪ “ਅੰਕੜਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ, ਏਆਈ ਅਤੇ ਡਾਟਾ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਵਿੱਚ (ਡਾਟਾ ਤੋਂ ਫ਼ੈਸਲਿਆਂ ਤੱਕ)” ਵਿੱਚ ਭਾਗ ਲਿਆ।

ਇਸ ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਬੀ.ਐੱਸ.ਸੀ. ਨਾਨ-ਮੈਡੀਕਲ, ਬੀ.ਐੱਸ.ਸੀ. ਕੰਪਿਊਟਰ ਸਾਇੰਸ, ਬੀ.ਐੱਸ.ਸੀ. ਆਨਰਜ਼ ਇਨ ਮੈਥੇਮੈਟਿਕਸ, ਬੀ.ਐੱਸ.ਸੀ. ਸੀ.ਐੱਸ.ਐੱਮ. ਅਤੇ ਐੱਮ.ਐੱਸ.ਸੀ. ਮੈਥੇਮੈਟਿਕਸ ਦੇ ਦੂਜੇ ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤਿਮ ਸਾਲ ਦੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਸ਼ਮੂਲੀਅਤ ਕੀਤੀ। ਇਸ ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪ ਦਾ ਉਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਰਟੀਫ਼ੀਸ਼ੀਅਲ ਇੰਟੈਲੀਜੈਂਸ (ਏਆਈ), ਡਾਟਾ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਅਤੇ ਡਾਟਾ-ਆਧਾਰਿਤ ਫ਼ੈਸਲੇ ਲੈਣ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਕਿਰਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਅੰਕੜਾ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਦੀ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੇਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਨੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਸੀ।

ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਔਸਤ (Mean), ਮੱਧਿਕਾ (Median) ਅਤੇ ਬਹੁਲਕ (Mode) ਦੀ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣੂ ਕਰਵਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਮਾਪਦੰਡ ਡਾਟਾ ਸਮੂਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਰ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਨ, ਪੈਟਰਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਛਾਣ ਕਰਨ, ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਸੂਝ-ਬੂਝ ਨਾਲ ਫ਼ੈਸਲੇ ਲੈਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ। ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਕੇਂਦਰੀ ਰੁਝਾਨ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਮਾਪਦੰਡ ਗੁੰਝਲਦਾਰ ਡਾਟਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਧੇਰੇ ਸਰਲ ਅਤੇ ਅਰਥਪੂਰਨ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ-ਨਾਲ ਏਆਈ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਕਾਸ, ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣ ਅਤੇ ਮੁਲਾਂਕਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੀ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਯੋਗਦਾਨ ਪਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਸੈਸ਼ਨਾਂ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ’ਤੇ ਵੀ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਅੰਕੜਾ-ਆਧਾਰਿਤ ਤਰਕਸ਼ੀਲ ਸੋਚ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਾ ਆਲੋਚਨਾਤਮਕ ਮੁਲਾਂਕਣ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਏਆਈ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਨਤੀਜਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਢੰਗ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਅਹਿਮ ਪਹਿਲੂ ਉੱਭਰ ਰਹੇ ਏਆਈ ਪਲੇਟਫ਼ਾਰਮਾਂ, ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿ ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity AI, DeepSeek ਅਤੇ Kimi ਆਦਿ ਦੀ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਸੀ। ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ, ਡਾਟਾ ਦੀ ਵਿਆਖਿਆ, ਸਮੱਸਿਆਵਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਲ ਅਤੇ ਖੋਜ-ਸਬੰਧੀ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਾਧਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਹ ਸਾਧਨ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣ, ਗਣਿਤਿਕ ਸੰਕਲਪਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ, ਨਵੇਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਿਰਜਣਾ ਅਤੇ ਕਾਰਜਕੁਸ਼ਲਤਾ ਵਧਾਉਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸਹਾਇਤਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ, ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟ ਅਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਪ੍ਰੌਂਪਟ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰਨ, ਏਆਈ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਕਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਭਰੋਸੇਯੋਗ ਤੇ ਅਰਥਪੂਰਨ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਗਣਿਤਿਕ ਤਰਕ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਮਹੱਤਤਾ ’ਤੇ ਵੀ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।

ਵਰਕਸ਼ਾਪ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੇ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਾ ਟਿੱਬੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਅਤੇ ਰੋਪੜ ਬੋਟ ਕਲੱਬ ਦਾ ਦੌਰਾ ਵੀ ਕੀਤਾ। ਇਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਹ ਵਿਦਿਅਕ ਯਾਤਰਾ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਗਿਆਨ, ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਮਨੋਰੰਜਨ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸੁਮੇਲ ਸਾਬਤ ਹੋਈ।

ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਗਣਿਤ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਦੇ ਮੁਖੀ ਡਾ. ਵਰੁਣ ਜੈਨ, ਸ੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਰਾਜਵਿੰਦਰ ਕੌਰ ਅਤੇ ਡਾ. ਚੇਤਨਾ ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਵੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਸਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਧ-ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਭਾਗ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਵਾਧਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਅਤੇ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਵਿਸ਼ਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਜੋੜ ਕੇ ਸਮਝਣ ਦੀ ਯੋਗਤਾ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਹੋ ਸਕੇ।

ਕਾਲਜ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਿੰਸੀਪਲ ਡਾ. ਨੀਰਜ ਗੋਇਲ ਨੇ ਇਸ ਉਪਰਾਲੇ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾ ਕੀਤੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਅਕ ਯਾਤਰਾਵਾਂ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਵਿਹਾਰਕ ਗਿਆਨ, ਵਿਸ਼ਲੇਸ਼ਣਾਤਮਕ ਸੋਚ ਅਤੇ ਆਰਟੀਫ਼ੀਸ਼ੀਅਲ ਇੰਟੈਲੀਜੈਂਸ ਤੇ ਡਾਟਾ ਸਾਇੰਸ ਵਰਗੇ ਉੱਭਰ ਰਹੇ ਖੇਤਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਹਿਮ ਭੂਮਿਕਾ ਨਿਭਾਉਂਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਦੇ ਮੌਕਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਭਾਗ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਉਤਸ਼ਾਹਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੁਨਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਨਿਖਾਰ ਸਕਣ, ਆਪਣੀ ਸੋਚ ਦਾ ਦਾਇਰਾ ਵਧਾ ਸਕਣ ਅਤੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਦੀਆਂ ਅਕਾਦਮਿਕ ਤੇ ਪੇਸ਼ੇਵਰ ਚੁਣੌਤੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਰ ਕਰ ਸਕਣ।
