Special Lecture on “Art, Books and the Artist” organised at Modi College, Patiala to mark International Mother Language Day

The Postgraduate Department of Punjabi of Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala, today organised a commemorative programme on the theme “Art, Books and the Artist” on the occasion of International Mother Language Day. The primary objective of the event was to highlight and encourage a deeper understanding of the interrelationship between art, literature and artists, while also acquainting students with the rich cultural heritage and literary traditions of the Punjabi language.
Dr. Surjit Singh, Professor, Department of Punjabi, Punjabi University, Patiala, attended as the Special Guest, while renowned theatre and film actor Rana Ranbir graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
In his welcome address, College Principal Dr. Neeraj Goyal emphasised the importance of preserving and promoting the Punjabi language. Referring to its rich cultural and literary traditions, he stated that Punjabi holds immense significance in the spheres of art, culture and literature, and also maintains a remarkable exchange with other Indian languages as well as global linguistic traditions.
Introducing the dignitaries, Head of the Punjabi Department Dr. Veerpal Kaur remarked that listening to and learning from such distinguished personalities is an achievement in itself.
Addressing the gathering, Rana Ranbir shared his thoughts on the role of artists in enriching Punjab’s cultural heritage and mother tongue. He said that self-confidence is the most important aspect of a student’s life, and books act as a source of inspiration in nurturing that confidence. He also spoke candidly about the struggles he faced in life and how he overcame them to achieve his present stature. The students listened to him with great interest, learned about his life journey and gained fresh inspiration for their future.
In his address, Dr. Surjit Singh stated that the more proficient a person becomes in his or her mother tongue, the more effectively one can learn other languages. He also highlighted some lesser-known aspects of Rana Ranbir’s life and personality.
The programme was conducted by Dr. Deepak Kumar, while the vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Davinder Singh. Faculty members and students of the college participated enthusiastically in the event. Among those present from the Punjabi Department were Dr. Rupinder Singh, Dr. Jaspreet Kaur, Dr. Gurjant Singh, Prof. Kulwinder Singh, Prof. Kapil Sharma, Dr. Parminder Singh, Prof. Gurvinder Singh, Prof. Talwinder Singh, Prof. Rupinder Kaur and Prof. Soni.
The programme not only spread awareness among students about the Punjabi language and its cultural significance but also sparked intellectual discussion. The lively interaction and photographs taken by students with the guests after the event reflected the need for organising such opportunities more frequently.
